Gitanjali - Mohanlal, Priyadarshan team up Again Shoot starts on July 2

A spinoff of Manichithrathazhu, the film will have the superstar reprising the role of psychiatrist Sunny Joseph

One thing that has never lost its allure in the past three decades in Mollywood is the excitement surrounding a Priyadarshan-Mohanlal project. Add to it the announcement that the film will be a spinoff of one of Mollywood’s biggest hits, Manichithrathazhu, and the anticipation peaks. The latest news from that front is that the movie, where the actordirector duo will team up next, has been titled Gitanjali. Close to 90% of the film will be canned in Trivandrum which, incidentally, was also the location of the duo’s first film, Thiranottam. Dennis Joseph, who has penned the script with Priyadarshan, tells us, “The shooting is set to start on July 5 and the main locations will be in and around Trivandrum. We would also be filming in Dubai and New Delhi.” Ask him if Gitanjali refers to the name of its lead character — like Manichithrathazhu’s Nagavalli who went on tobecome a cult character in the annals of Malayalam cinema — and Dennis says that the team has been given strict instructions not to reveal more details of the film. Though, the team is apparently yet to finalise the female lead. Our source from the production crew tells us, “We’ve shortlisted a few people from the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi film industries. Within the next two weeks,we will finalise the cast.” Besides Mohanlal reprising his character in Manichithrathazhu — as psychiatrist Dr Sunny Joseph — Innocent and K B Ganesh Kumar, who also starred in the film, will be a part of Gitanjali. Reportedly, actors Madhu and Siddique too play prominent roles in the film. Earlier, the makers were mulling the use of 3D holographic technique in the movie.
